Sylvia Burwell is an American politician and public servant who served as the 22nd United States Secretary of Health and Human Services from 2014 to 2017 under President Barack Obama. She was also the Director of the Office of Management and Budget from 2013 to 2014. Prior to her work in the federal government, Burwell served as the President of the Walmart Foundation and the Global Development Program at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. She holds degrees from Harvard University and Oxford University. Burwell is currently the President of American University in Washington, D.C.
